Story
THANKS SO MUCH for visiting my fundraising page!
An IRONMAN……why you might be thinking? Well I have always wanted to do one and being given an opportunity with Alzheimer’s Research I couldn’t refuse.
Sure, I have run marathons and ultra’s, I have taken part in CrossFit / HYROX events, but nothing comes close to the challenge I will come up against with IRONMAN WALES- equally its so different to all I have completed before. The event will take place on 22nd September in Tenby, Wales.
For those that don’t know what an IRONMAN is it consists of a 2.4mile swim- this is completed in the sea, from the swim you get on your bike and cycle 112miles it’s a hilly route so the hills will be consistent after the cycle on go the running trainers and there is a full marathon which is 26.2miles standing between you and the finish line. Each part has a time limit and if you go over this- you are out. Sadly no one ever got a medal for taking part.
It isn’t just an endurance sport- it’s a mindset one- at no point can headphones be worn- its you, your mind and all the elements.
Writing this out and processing it bit by bit- actually fills me with lots of emotions one main one being nervous….and that’s ok to admit.
So why now? I guess the real question here is why not……it’s been on the radar for a while, and I thought if not now then when? I am a firm believer that if you can do something for someone else then you should- this is one of the main reasons many of the events I do are on behalf of a charity.
The charity in which I am raising money for whilst taking on this challenge is Alzheimer’s Research who have recently changed their logo to state ‘To find a cure’ because they truly believe this is possible. Many of us have directly been affected by Alzheimer’s with a family member or friend suffering with it, or we will have known someone whose family or friend has been diagnosed with the progressive condition/disease.
My family have been affected and so this race I will be keeping someone very close in my thoughts when it gets tough giving me that push to keep going.
Alzheimer’s like many other diseases can take anyone at any time. Alzheimer’s leads to memory problems, confusion, disorientation, speech issues and personality changes to name a few, it’s a progressive condition that worsens over time often resulting in the individual forgetting who they are and those around them, forgetting their life memories and accomplishments. Just imagine that for a second…..not remembering or being able to piece together your life. We certainly need a cure for that.
So in donating you are not only supporting me but together we are helping find a cure because no one deserves to forget their life and their loved ones, no one deserved not to tell their story and no one deserves to be remembered for the shell of the person they once were.
Thank you again for your support and generosity.
Alzheimer's Research UK
Almost one million people are living with dementia today. Tragically, not one of them will survive.
Alzheimer’s Research UK exists to change that.
As the UK’s leading dementia research charity, we are working to revolutionise the way we treat, diagnose and prevent dementia. And then, we will find a way to cure it.
To do this, we’re investing in the best research, powering the most forward-thinking scientists and joining forces with world-class organisations.
With your support, we promise we will not stop until dementia can no longer destroy lives.
We are Alzheimer’s Research UK.
We exist for a cure.
