Story

I am so honoured to be participating in this year's full distance IRONMAN in Cardiff 2024 and fundraising for Alzheimer's Research UK.

Our brains control everything we think, feel, remember and do.

There are diseases that stop a person’s brain from working properly. When a person has one of these diseases, they may have problems thinking, remembering and speaking. They might say or do things that seem strange to others, and find it harder to do everyday things. They may not seem like the person they used to be.

Dementia is not something that just happens to everyone as they get older. It is caused by different diseases. These diseases affect different parts of the brain, so they affect people in different ways. And diseases can be prevented.

Your support will allow Alzheimer's Research UK fund thousands of dementia researchers based across the UK and the world. This work fits into three themes that will drive us towards a cure - treat, diagnose and prevent. We have all been affected by someone with this debilitating disease which strips the most precious thing away from us, our memory. And I am honoured to be working with Alzheimer's Research UK to help them further the incredible work they do.

An Ironman Triathlon is one of a series of long-distance triathlon races organized by the World Triathlon Corporation (WTC), consisting of a 2.4-mile (3.9 km) swim, a 112-mile (180.2 km) bicycle ride and a marathon 26.22-mile (42.2 km) run completed in that order, a total of 140.6 miles (226.3 km). It is widely considered one of the most difficult one-day sporting events in the world. Most Ironman events have a time limit of 16 or 17 hours to complete the race, course dependent. The mandatory cut off time to complete the 2.4-mile (3.86 km) swim is 2 hours 20 minutes. The mandatory bike cut off time for when an athlete must have completed their swim, transition and bike varies generally between 10 hours and 10 hours 30 minutes from when an athlete began their swim. The mandatory run cut off varies between 16 and 17 hours from when athlete began their swim. Many races will also have intermediate bike, run, and transition cut off times specific to each race venue. Any participant who completes the triathlon within these time constraints is designated an Ironman.

My goal for this year is to take on 'The Dragon' Ironman Cardiff on September 22 this year in aid of raising crucial funds for Alzheimer's Research.

Please support my efforts by making a secure online donation and by posting a message of support.

Alzheimer's Research UK

Almost one million people are living with dementia today. Tragically, not one of them will survive.

Alzheimer’s Research UK exists to change that.

As the UK’s leading dementia research charity, we are working to revolutionise the way we treat, diagnose and prevent dementia. And then, we will find a way to cure it.

To do this, we’re investing in the best research, powering the most forward-thinking scientists and joining forces with world-class organisations.

With your support, we promise we will not stop until dementia can no longer destroy lives.

We are Alzheimer’s Research UK.

We exist for a cure.
